A Successful Day of Awareness and Empowerment

Today, we Denkelly foundation made a significant impact at the Robin and Estelle Clerke Family Center Mgbakwu by raising awareness about Neonatal Jaundice.

We were honored to have Dr. Belonwu Osakwe Onyechi as our guest medical expert, providing invaluable insights and answering questions. Our dedicated volunteers, Kelechi Otti and Mrs. Vivian Ahakakwu, were instrumental in ensuring the event’s success.

A Day of Success: Neonatal Jaundice Awareness and Empowerment in Mgbakwu
On December 16, 2024, a significant event took place at the Robin and Estelle Clerke Family Center Mgbakwu, focused on raising awareness about Neonatal Jaundice (NNJ). The event brought together medical experts, volunteers, community members, and pregnant women to educate and empower the community about this prevalent condition.

Key Highlights of the Event:

Guest Medical Expert: Dr. Belonwu Osakwe Onyechi, a renowned medical expert, provided invaluable insights and answered questions about NNJ, its causes, and management strategies.

Dedicated Volunteers: Kelechi Otti and Mrs. Vivian Onyenwe played crucial roles in organizing and facilitating the event, ensuring its success.

Generous Support: The event received unwavering support from @ Rachael Yohanna ED davinacarefoundation and the host, Mrs. Beatrice, who provided resources and logistical assistance. A great thanks to our donors and supporters who made sure that the event was a reality, we hope to partner and work with you all in our subsequent event

Educational Focus: The program aimed to provide essential information on recognizing and managing NNJ, dispelling harmful myths and misconceptions surrounding this condition.

Community Engagement: Over 40 pregnant women in the Mgbakwu community participated in the event, receiving vital information and empowerment.

Collaboration: The initiative aligns with global health objectives, seeking collaboration with international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) to integrate effective NNJ management strategies into global neonatal care guidelines.

Importance of Neonatal Jaundice Awareness:
Neonatal jaundice is a common condition affecting newborns, particularly preterm infants. It occurs due to an excess of bilirubin in the bloodstream, which can lead to serious health consequences if left untreated. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial to prevent complications such as brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Empowering the Community:
By raising awareness and providing education, the event empowered mothers and families to recognize the signs and symptoms of NNJ, seek timely medical attention, and make informed decisions about their babies’ health. This initiative contributes to reducing the burden of NNJ in the Mgbakwu community and beyond.

Looking Ahead:

The organizers Denkelly Charity and Empowerment Foundation are committed to building on the success of this event and continuing to raise awareness about NNJ. They plan to collaborate with healthcare providers, community organizations, and educational institutions like London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Nest360 , Solina Centre for International Development and Research -SCIDaR World Health Organization (WHO) Global Rights Ifakara Health Institute and other stakeholders to promote preventive measures and improve access to treatment for newborns with jaundice transform neonatal care in Nigeria
